Breastfeeding Biscuit Recipe
I loved breastfeeding my 2 girls, my big girl breastfed until 2yr 7m, and little girl fed until 3yrs. Breastfeeding is a skill the new mothers have to learn, we will have intuition around it, but it is a learned skill and there are times when we all need help.
The Australian Breastfeeding Association has a free Breastfeeding Helpline 1800 686 268 staffed by trained counsellors who are there to help with your breastfeeding questions. I urge you to join the ABA and make use of their wonderful resources.
Here is my recipe for Breastfeeding Biscuits. This is my recipe that I've tweaked over the years and I love it! The bikkies are packed full of great nutrition that helps to improve Mum's general nutrition at this draining time and also includes galactagogues (lactation promoting ingredients) brewers yeast, linseed, quinoa and fennel. My whole family loves these biscuits, and as yet neither my husband nor children have started to lactate much to their relief!

These delicious cookies help to support lactation and contain milk supply boosting ingredients (galactagogues).
200gm plain flour (healthy it up by using wholemeal flour, or a good spelt flour, or substitute 100gm of quinoa flour)
150gm rolled oats (or substitute quinoa flakes)
100gm dessicated coconut (look for a preservative free product like Nakula)
100gm brown sugar
60gm ground linseed (sometimes called Flax Seed, can use LSA)
30gm brewers yeast (from healthfood shop)
2 tsp ground ginger
2tsp ground fennel seeds
1.5 cups chopped dates
100gm butter (or coconut/olive oil if you're dairy free)
75ml water
2 tbsp golden syrup
2 tbsp black strap molasses
1.5 tsp bicarb soda
fennel seads to decorate
Preheat oven to 150C, prepare baking tray with baking paper. In a deep bowl mix dry ingredients together. In a saucepan heat: butter, water, golden syrup and molasses stirring until butter melts. Remove from heat, add bicarb soda. Pour butter mix onto the dry ingredients and stir until combined. Roll into balls, place on baking trays, flatten with a fork add a sprinkle of fennel seeds and bake for 15 mins. Cool and store in an airtight container. Enjoy.
